Annotation
The final concert of the Baroque Soirées will bring together, during the Christmas season, the works of two great masters of sacred music – Johann Sebastian Bach and Jan Dismas Zelenka. The works of both composers clearly reflect the inspirational influences of various national traditions, as well as a masterful musical expression of the hope and joy of the Christmas story. The evening’s programme will be framed by Zelenka’s ‘Lauda Jerusalem’ and ‘Magnificat in C major’, solemn works full of dramatic tension and musical contrasts. Bach’s arias from the famous ‘Christmas Oratorio’ and ‘Magnificat’, together with arias from the Christmas cantata ‘Christen, ätzet diesen Tag’, will bring a pastoral idyll and spiritual solace. The contemplative atmosphere of the evening will be provided by Zelenka’s Advent motet ‘Alma Redemptoris Mater’ and Advent offertory ‘Ecce Dominus veniunt’ by Antonín Reichenauer.
